Yasuaki Asagi, one of Honda’s F1 bosses, believes competing power unit manufacturers may be hiding the true impact of the switch to E10 fuel in 2022. Asagi believes the power loss from the new fuel will likely have a greater impact than what manufacturers such as Ferrari have previously claimed.
In a post-season interview with Autosport, Asagi, one of the key architects of Honda’s recent success in Formula 1, said:
“It seems other companies are saying it’s about the same, but on the contrary, such an announcement means it’s difficult to get the same performance as last year. The response to E10 fuel is the greatest (to PU manufacturers). The engine architecture was already set (homologated for 2021) so we made changes to get the best performance with E10 fuel.”
F1 is transitioning to E10 fuel from the 2022 season as part of its larger effort to become carbon neutral by 2030. The new fuel is a blend of 90 percent petroleum products and 10 percent sustainably produced ethanol.

Honda believes the new fuel will have some benefits in terms of performance, such as: B. Better control over “abnormal combustion” which could improve reliability. However, the fuel will also reduce final power by an estimated 20 hp.
Honda completes new PU ahead of full freeze on engine development in F1
Asagi has announced that the Japanese manufacturer is putting the finishing touches on its 2022 specification power unit ahead of a total ban on engine development.
In a post-season interview with Autosport, the Japanese executive said:
“The work on the unit is almost complete. we [Honda] strive for maximum efficiency, but with E10 fuel, the power of the engine also decreases, and the amount of electricity production also decreases. There are always small details and corrections when there are problems, but if you didn’t have the concept or the basics ready by the end of last year you wouldn’t be in time for the season.” We will miss those flying displays this season“/>

Honda is confident their gains over the winter will be enough to put their PU on par with Mercedes and Ferrari. Once the drive units are homologated ahead of the season opener, manufacturers are not allowed to modify them in any way except for safety reasons.

This means that the best possible PU specification is crucial to remain competitive not only in the coming season but also into 2026 when the new generation of drive units is due to be introduced.
