HIGHLIGHTS: Red Bull and Mercedes score points in the F1 Esports Series Pro Championship after the epic showdown in Spa

After the disappointment of being racked up in Monza, Frede Rasmussen prevailed in a wet spa thriller, claiming his second win in the 2021 F1 Esports Series Pro Championship presented by Aramco and the third Red Bull Racing Esports win in a row.

Summary from Wednesday

Wednesday got off to a perfect start for Rasmussen when pole position became victory for the Dane around Silverstone after Mercedes newcomer Dani Moreno bravely overtook Dani Moreno on the last lap.

Everything went wrong at the second event in Monza, however, when Rasmussen was beaten from behind after a Red Bull one-two at Turn 1 and the order tumbled to a heartbreaking eighth place.

Team-mate Marcel Kiefer remained in the lead and was able to secure a second victory of the evening for Red Bull – but the loss of a possible double victory hurt, as Kiefer said after the race.

The action in the spa

Wet races are relatively rare in F1 Esports, but we got our third year of 2021 at Spa when the drivers welcomed a wet start after qualifying. David Tonizza took a shock pole position, with championship leader Jarno Opmeer retiring in Q2 and starting from P14.

When the lights waved, the grid was split – nine of the top 10 riders started with full rain tires, but runner-up Rasmussen opted for intermediates, along with the entire bottom half of the field.

The decision did not pay off in the short term. Rasmussen slipped until the middle of the lap when the field reached Pouhon halfway through the lap and finished the first tour in P7. Dani Bereznay didn’t even make it that far and fell on the descent from La Source.

The race was marked by risks and gambling. Would it clear up or would it keep raining? Pit for fresh intermediates or do you wear the tires you started on to the end? Those questions were answered for multiple riders on lap 8, when Tonizza, Longuet, Blakeley, Boroumand and Tormala all competed for the Inters with green walls.

The grip advantage was not as dramatic as some would have expected, but the group still pushed for the top trio Rasmussen, Kiefer and Opmeer, who all stayed on their starting tires.

For the second race in a row, a Red Bull double victory seemed announced – but it shouldn’t be like in Monza. The reigning champion Opmeer caught up with Kiefer at the beginning of the last lap and threw himself on the Kemmel straight. In true Hakkinen-Zonta-Schumacher fashion, Opmeer’s Mercedes-powered car passed by, while Kiefer’s white car and Tonizza’s red Ferrari stopped.

Tonizza did not give in, however, and in a copy of the last corner at Spa 2020, Kiefer was relegated at the Schikane bus stop on the last lap.

Rasmussen went wild home for the second win in 2021, followed by Opmeer, Tonizza and Kiefer. Nicolas Longuet was fifth ahead of Blakeley, Bari Boroumand, Simon Weigang and Daniele Haddad.

What’s happening now?

With six failed and six outstanding races, we are perfectly balanced – and so is the team standings. Mercedes and Red Bull are tied at the top with 140 points, which wonderfully reflects the closeness of their real F1 counterparts on the track. In the drivers’ standings, Opmeer is 14 points ahead of Blakeley, exactly the same as at the end of Event 1.
