After a failed stint in the main Red Bull team, Gasly returned to his sister team AlphaTauri after the 2019 summer break and has remained the leading driver of the Faenza team ever since.
As soon as he regained his confidence, the Frenchman began to achieve superb results which were crowned by a stunning first win at last year’s Italian Grand Prix.
Gasly continued to shine in 2021 and kept AlphaTauri almost single-handedly on the hunt for fifth place in the constructors’ championship.
While his team is currently tied with Alpine, Gasly is ninth in the drivers’ standings, reinforced by a Baku podium and two fourth places.
According to team principal Tost, Gasly is still improving from race to race, as evidenced by his outstanding qualifying performance lately.
In the last two Grand Prix he left behind all Ferrari and McLaren cars that are fighting further up in the constructors’ championship.
“Pierre is constantly improving,” Tost said before the Sao Paulo Grand Prix last week.
“Because if you compare him with the one at the beginning of the season, he has made another big step forward in terms of his behavior in the car and his understanding of the technical side.
“We just had the technical debrief and he changed so many positions on the mapping site on his qualifying lap. And that shows how mature he is, how well he understands the technology of the car because these cars and assemblies are so complicated. “

Alpine and AlphaTauri both left Brazil with 112 points. Tost admitted that his team’s car is clearly the fastest of the two at the moment, but remains cautious about the fact that “one race can change everything” as Alpine won the Hungarian Grand Prix with Esteban Ocon.
