Pierre Gasly believes Ferrari could be the team to watch for in the 2021 Formula 1 season even if Mercedes is likely to end up “clearly at the top”.
The Scuderia made it through Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel. only three podium places sixth in the constructors’ championship last year.
AlphaTauri was only 24 points behind, Their season was marked by a notable Grand Prix win for Gasly at Monza.
However, the pre-2021 tests have offered Ferrari a glimpse of a brighter future after its worst season in four decades. Carlos Sainz set the third fastest time in Bahrain last Sunday, while he and Leclerc are both said to be more satisfied with the handling of the car after problems driving straight ahead last year.
Gasly, who has spoken privately to Leclerc about Ferrari’s progress, believes the team is keeping their cards close to their chests regarding their progress during the off-season.
Gasly: ”I think Ferrari is hiding somehow”
He told Stats Perform News: “I think Ferrari is kind of hiding and not showing too much. Compared to last year, I think it’s a lot better.
“I discussed it with [Charles] Leclerc after the test and we exchanged a few messagesbut don’t talk too much, just try [laughing], To have an idea!
“I think we are close. I don’t know if they’re ahead of us or if we’re a little ahead of us. But they have clearly taken a step forward.
“I think McLaren seems like a very tough opponent and competitor at the moment, especially with a Mercedes engine. You seem to have put together a strong package.
“Then we will see above what happens between Mercedes and Red Bull; it is very difficult to say and to draw a conclusion.”. Mercedes had a pretty tough test with some reliability issues, but we know how strong they are as a team So I wouldn’t be surprised to see them at the top. “
The new season starts in Bahrain on March 28th.
