Gasly had to retire after contact with Leclerc at the exit of Turn 1 on the first lap at the Red Bull Ring.
The Ferrari driver appeared to go straight into Gasly, cutting the rear of his AlphaTauri, inflicting a flat tire and suspension damage in the process.
The stewards decided not to investigate the incident after it was classified as a typical round 1 incident by Race Director Michael Masi.
Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix that weekend, Gasly asked why it wasn’t investigated as it had ruined its race, citing Valtteri Bottas’ penalty for his pit lane spin as an example of a driver who didn’t interfere with the race of anyone, but still did took a punishment.

“No in the end for me, it is clear that it would not have changed my race. I think the damage was already done so in the end I don’t care, but I have to say I was a bit surprised at the time there was no further investigation, obviously, you know, it wasn’t on purpose and it isn’t something Charles did on purpose, but it certainly had a pretty big impact on my race, and especially after Valtteri got three places penalties for losing control of his car in the pit lane, but that doesn’t really affect my race on other people’s races, ”said Gasly.
“And what obviously affected my race, I have to say, I was surprised, but like I said, at the end of the day I only care about my own race and not much has changed on this side, but simple something we’ll probably talk to Michael about [Masi]. “

In light of the incident, Leclerc admits he could have avoided iy but insists he has no concerns about his racing skills after recent comments from F1 boss Ross Brawn indicated that top drivers – like Leclerc – who fall back into midfield, lack “patience” and therefore lead to incidents.
“Well, it definitely put us on our back foot. Looking back on the incident I might have done something to avoid it, but it’s too late now, ”Leclerc added. Then I’m actually quite happy with it for my wheel-to-wheel race.
“Of course it’s always at the limit, but if you look at the last race, it helped us a lot to get back through the field without losing too much speed. It’s always a fine balance, it was a bit too much on the first lap, but I talked to Pierre and everything is fine there. “
