Ferrari, hoping to recover from its worst Formula 1 season in 40 years, took down its 2021 car on Wednesday. The SF21, the 67th franchise company in Maranello, Italy, for Formula 1, has a conservative, no-frills paint job.
The car uses the same carbon fiber chassis as in 2020. In the engine, aerodynamics and rear end, the team has made changes for 2021 as the F1 teams adjust to new specifications this year.
“When we started the SF21 project, our first task was figuring out which area of the car to focus on in order to make a radical change,” said Enrico Cardile, Ferrari’s Chassis Manager. “We opted for the rear end and developed a new gearbox and suspension system. This, in addition to the efforts of our drive unit colleagues, has resulted in a much tighter rear end.
“We also looked at the cooling system to increase the effectiveness of the central radiator and added more downwashing to the body. Aerodynamics was one of the areas affected by the regulatory changes aimed at increasing capability to reduce vertical loads so as not to put too much stress on the tires, so when we started developing the aerodynamics of the car, we set ourselves two goals: regaining more aerodynamic downforce than was lost by the regulations and reducing air resistance.
This car is the 67th that was built in Maranello to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship.

“Due to the regulations, less drastic changes were possible at the front end of the car. So we developed a new front wing that works in conjunction with a new concept nose, but the chassis itself and the suspension are different from last year’s SF1000.” . ”
The team will have a new driver line-up this year as former McLaren driver Carlos Sainz Jr. joins Charles Leclerc. The veteran Sebastian Vettel is now with Aston Martin (formerly Racing Point).
Ferrari finished sixth in the F1 Constructors’ Championship in 2020, the worst result since tenth place in 1980.
“Our two drivers have a lot of positive energy,” said Ferrari racing director Laurent Mekies. “Carlos spent a lot of time in the factory and integrated into the team very quickly.
“Charles is already perfectly at home in the team: he knows what he wants and is also aware of the role he plays in the team, both in and out of the car. We saw that over the winter.” Two guys get on very well and that can only be good for the whole team. “

The car is expected to make its debut on the track on March 11th on the team’s day of shooting in Bahrain. The teams are allowed to test up to 100 km on the track on these days. The season starts on March 28th in Bahrain.
