Ferrari switched from a supercharged V8 engine to a supercharged hybrid V6 engine for the new 296 GTB. This led to more power and reduced emissions and fuel consumption.
With the European Union tightening its emissions standards, which will primarily affect sports cars with larger engines and higher emissions, Ferrari is trying to change the technology. The Italian car brand could also introduce hybrid technology into the V12.
There have also been rumors that Ferrari is considering other technologies for its V12 engine. Previously it was reported that the V12 may get hybrid technology but stick with suction instead of adding a turbocharger. Another rumor was that the V12 could continue to drive with a reduced displacement of currently 6.5 liters. In this case the number of cylinders remains the same.
Introducing turbocharged technology into the V12 engine along with hybrid propulsion would allow Ferrari to build its next hypercar with the power it needs and meet the stricter emissions standards.
Ferrari has also said that its next hypercar will focus on agility rather than brutal power delivery. The company had previously claimed to continue using the V12 engine. In the 812 Superfast and 812 Competizione, the engine has even been upgraded to achieve around 30 hp more power.
Ferrari’s relationship with the V12 dates back to 1947. The company is determined to keep building the V12. In such a scenario, hybridization could be a possible solution that reduces emissions while maintaining similar performance.
