- Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto says his team’s F1 cars are up to 50 hp behind Mercedes.
- The team achieved their best points of the season when Sebastian Vettel finished third and Charles Leclerc fourth in Turkey.
- The podium for Vettel was 121st of his career, but his first in 2020.
Ferrari F1 team principal Mattia Binotto is doing his best to downplay hopes that Ferrari’s new engine will be enough to catch Mercedes in 2021.
The head of the Maranello team said this week that early testing of the new engine’s dynamometer had been “very promising”.
But Binotto added there is still a long way to go.
“We don’t have the best engine right now, but we can have a completely new one next year,” said Binotto.
While initial results in business are encouraging and there seems to be some excitement that Ferrari’s full recovery from a 2020 slump could come quickly, there are no guarantees.
“Can we reach Mercedes? Maybe that’s asking too much as it means gaining between 40 and 50 horsepower,” said Binotto. “But to be at eye level with Honda and Renault today would be a remarkable step forward in itself.
“We have to keep in mind that only one engine specification will be allowed for all of 2021, with the exception of minor details. There is no room for error,” he added.
Ferrari left the Turkey F1 Grand Prix after completing its biggest points race of the season. Sebastian Vettel was third and Charles Leclerc fourth. It was Vettel’s first podium finish in 2021.
It’s been a while, “said Vettel.” Nice to take home a trophy. We’ve had a tough year so far. We mostly had problems in qualifying and when you get back it will be very difficult. “

Is Ferrari’s place in the overall standings a slip or the new reality for the once powerful team? Since no major engine modifications are expected in sport by 2022, the Ferrari Tifosi is finding it difficult to be overly optimistic.
