The PSU update improved the performance of the SF21

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has announced that the team has seen an improvement in competitiveness with the improved hybrid engine upgrade system that brought Charles Leclerc’s SF21 at the Russian GP.

“It brought us some lap times, worked reliably and delivered what we expected from it,” confirms Mattia Binotto. He even added that Leclerc was able to follow Max Verstappen, who had a more powerful Honda engine and at one point even overtook Verstappen.

Ferrari should maintain the new engine for reasons of reliability. While the entire engine update in Sochi is supposed to add 15hp, it hasn’t been run at full blast and the upgrade only added an 8hp boost.

Carlos Sainz, who finished on the podium in P2 P3 after qualifying, was not armed with the updated unit. It will also get a new engine soon.

“As soon as possible, because we think that’s an advantage. Then we have to decide based on the track and the overtaking opportunities. But I am not denying that it can be done as quickly as possible,” said the Ferrari F1 boss.

This engine update is part of the development work that Ferrari is doing on an entirely new unit that will hit the market in 2022 and that aims to catch up with, if not above, Mercedes and Honda. After the 2022 season there will be an engine development stop, which is why Ferrari must have the best possible engine.
