Carlos Sainz Junior says Ferrari is already working hard on the root causes of its poor performance at the French Grand Prix last weekend.
He and his teammate Charles Leclerc both qualified in the top 7, but finished the points in Paul Ricard as their handling deteriorated during the race.
Sainz admitted the team is unlikely to have a problem in the future and is likely to remain a limitation on certain tracks.
“It’s only been three days since we had the problem and of course you can imagine that we were quite surprised as a team,” he said. “But in a way, we’ve known for a while that we’re facing this type of front tire degradation.
“It is very interesting to see how such a large factory, such a large organization, get their recovery plan in motion and see how we are going to approach and solve this problem. I’ve been pretty involved in all of the meetings, in all of the discussions, to see how we can do better. I’ve spent the last three days in Maranello and we’ve definitely put together a short, medium and long term plan to see if we can do better. “
Ferrari’s weakness is particularly acute on tracks where the front tires are the biggest limitation on car performance, Sainz said.

“Obviously, Pirelli and we have our simulation tools that tell which routes are more limited to the front and which to the rear,” he said when asked by RaceFans. “So we know that it was a very limited track in France and we may have trouble.
“On Friday it was actually quite warm, the track was in good condition and we saw no signs that the front would be a restriction. But suddenly on Sunday with the change of track condition that was a very big issue. “
Due to vehicle development constraints, Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto believes the team will not be able to fully remedy its weakness this year.
“I agree with Mattia, it’s not like we’ll solve the problem in three days,” said Sainz. “So we will be exposed to the conditions and pursue changes. But we can do something to learn.
“We have to experiment with different setup directions, different configurations that we can build into the car to at least alleviate the problems in the short term, and in the medium and long term, very large investigations are already being made to solve them.” to the factory. “
