Following the arrival of Sainz from McLaren ahead of the 2021 season, Ferrari said late last year it was planning to run the Spanish circuit in older machines to make it easier to adapt to team life.
As Motorsport.com reported Thursday, Sainz’s first foray in a Ferrari F1 car will take place next week when he drives the 2018 spec SF71H on his private test track.
Ferrari confirmed plans for Sainz to take part in the test on Saturday, revealing that seven drivers will take part in five days of running.
Sainz will be behind the wheel of the Ferrari SF71H for a day and a half. His excursions are planned for the entire Wednesday and Thursday morning.
Although the test will be carried out in older machines, he will give Sainz the opportunity to get used to Ferrari’s systems and to work with his new racing team and engineers before the only test of the F1 in Bahrain on March 12th in Bahrain.
Sainz’s 2021 teammate Charles Leclerc is due to test on Tuesday. It will mark the Monaco driver’s return to the cockpit after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier this month.

Five drivers from the Ferrari Driver Academy will also take part in the Fiorano race. Monday will be split between Giuliano Alesi, Marcus Armstrong and Robert Shwartzman, who all competed in F2 last year.
It’s the first time both Alesi and Armstrong have driven an F1 car, while Shwartzman last appeared for Ferrari in the year-end test in Abu Dhabi.
Ferrari has also chosen the F2 champion Schumacher, who will be promoted to F1 this year with the Haas team.
Schumacher will test the SF71H on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning before handing over the reins to Ferrari test driver Callum Ilott on Friday afternoon.
Teams are prohibited from using F1 cars that have been driven in the last two seasons for private testing. The 2018 spec car is immediately available to FDA members after its use in Fiorano last year.
