Anyone who works for the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team obviously has no time to be patient.
At least someone at Ferrari has seen enough after three disappointing races at the start of the 2020 F1 season. While team boss Mattia Binotto, who is rumored to be in the hot seat at Ferrari, survived the latest team shake, it is clear that the dominoes are falling.
Ferrari announced on its website that the team is restructuring its technical department. The team leadership promises “a more targeted and simplified chain of command that gives the heads of the individual departments the necessary powers to achieve their goals”.
To get there, the team created a performance development department headed by Enrico Cardile. The other main areas of Ferrari’s drive structure will remain unchanged, with Enrico Gualtieri in charge of the drive unit, Laurent Mekies as sports director and track activities, while Simone Resta will continue to head the chassis engineering department.
Binotto remains team boss and managing director.
Will the changes be more than trying to gloss over a Ferrari start that gives them a disappointing fifth place in the F1 Constructors’ Championship? The team is already 94 points behind team-leading Mercedes. But before you think of Mercedes, Ferrari has to get past Racing Point, McLaren and Red Bull, who are second, third and fourth in the overall standings.
On the driver’s side, Charles Leclerc is seventh and Sebastian Vettel is 10. Leclerc, with 45 points, is almost two full races behind the points leading Lewis Hamilton.
“As indicated a few days ago, we are making changes to the technical side of the organization to accelerate the design and development at the front of vehicle performance,” said Binotto. “A change of direction was necessary in order to define clear responsibilities and work processes and at the same time reaffirm the company’s trust in its technical talent pool.
“The department headed by Enrico Cardile will be able to count on the experience of Rory Byrne and established engineers like David Sanchez. It will lay the foundation for the development of the car.”
“We believe the Ferrari staff is of the highest caliber and we have nothing to fault our main competitors in that regard, but we did have to make a crucial change and raise the bar on the responsibilities of department heads.
“We have said it several times, but it is worth repeating: We have started laying the foundations for a process that will lead to a new and permanent winning cycle. It will be some time yet and we will suffer the setbacks we are currently experiencing in terms of results and performance. However, we have to respond to these deficits with strength and determination in order to be back at the top of the sport as soon as possible. This is what we all want and what our fans around the world expect from us. “
