Mercedes, for its part, took the blame and, according to Nico Rosberg, Toto Wolff even went to apologize to Christian Horner.

Horner wants the FIA to review budget cap rules as car damage could be crippling
The Ferrari and Red Bull team bosses have spoken out and said that rivals who crash their cars should be liable for damages. Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto was upset over the fact that Charles Leclerc of the Aston Martin was taken out by Lance Stroll from a position of strength where he could potentially have achieved a podium. Similar comments have flowed from the Red Bull paddock since Lewis Hamilton’s clash with Max Verstappen at the British GP, just to reinforce the notion related to the horrific crash of Bottas’s second Mercedes at the Hungarian GP.
“I think it will be worth discussing with the other FIA and F1 team principals in the near future. If you are not guilty, such damage in the budget ceiling is of course an even greater consequence now.” said Ferrari F1 boss Mattia Binotto to AutoSport.

“Should we add exceptions? I am not sure if this is the solution. I think it can be very difficult to be monitored. But I think we can consider that if a driver is faulty, the driver’s team should pay at least to the other teams for the damage and repairs. That makes the drivers more responsible, “he added.
The budget cap made life especially difficult for the big three teams as they have to pay for repairs or replacements of parts from the budget cap. In the case of Red Bull, engine failure could also result in take-off penalties if the engine has to be replaced more than 3 times a season.
“The cost of the damage, it looks like an engine in Sergio’s car, and for Max … the mechanics did wonders to get the car to work at all,” the Red Bull team boss told Sky F1.
“Max drove half a car – the entire right side of the bargeboard was missing. It’s brutal for us, but I think the team did well to get the car out again. Max fought for that one point and that” could prove crucial at the end of the year, “he added.

While Mercedes has regained the title lead, its drivers are facing the heat and Wolff had to defend them

Mercedes, for its part, accepted the guilt and, according to Nico Rosberg, Toto Wolff even apologized to Christian Horner, the Red Bull boss, but his apology was not accepted. Bottas clashed with Lando Norris and Sergio Perez. Norris, in turn, crashed into Verstappen, who drove the entire race without a barge board to cripple his car, and he only made it to P9 while Hamilton stormed into P3.

Wolff found himself on the other side when Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Imola with young Mercedes driver George Russell. At the time, Wolff also complained about the possible cost of the damage, saying that Russell should have thought before attempting the move since a Mercedes was in front of him.
