On April 19, Ferrari unveiled the Ferrari 296 GTS hybrid-convertible and triggered headlines around the world. Based on the GTB, the convertible GTS will further diversify Ferrari’s mid-engined sport range. Both cars are powered by Ferrari’s new 120° V6 engine that works in tandem with a plug-in (PHEV) electric motor. In hybrid mode, the GTS is capable of putting down 830 cv (830 horsepower) to the wheels. Propelling the convertible from 0-100 kmph in just 2.9 seconds.

The 120° V6 has an overall displacement of 2,992cc making 663 horsepower at 8,500rpm. This is combined with a 7.45 kWh high voltage battery to produce a maximum horsepower of 830cv (hybrid). All of this power is channeled through Ferrari’s F1 dual-clutch transmission (DCT). While electronic aids such as ABS EVO, 6W-CDS, high-performance EBD with energy recovery, etc, keep the vehicle and driver in check.

The GTS is also the first spider format to feature a rear-wheel-drive plug-in (PHEV) hybrid architecture. The ICE engine is integrated with the rear-mounted electric motor. A Transition Manager Actuator (TMA) enables both power units to communicate allowing them to be used in hybrid or stand-alone modes.

The 296 GTB chassis was redesigned for the GTS spider for improved torsional rigidity and beam stiffness. As a result, Ferrari has optimized the GTS chassis to have 8 per cent more rigidity and stiffness than the GTB. The convertible also marks the debut of Ferrari’s ‘Tea Tray’. A signature aero-device in the front bumper generates downforce and increases air flow.

In the cockpit, the GTS shares the full digital interface that comes in the GTB. With most of the instrumentation focused on the driver’s side, accompanied by two semi-touch screens, one on the passenger side. Ferrari has also developed a track version of the GTS, called Asseto Fiorano. Named after Ferrari’s own Fiorano circuit. The Fiorano package boasts of significant weight reductions and added aero features. It features Mulitmatic shock absorbers and carbon fiber components on both the exterior and interior of the sportscar. It also comes in a special 250 Le Mans inspired livery. Ferrari claims the Asseto Fiorano is 8kgs lighter than the standard 296 GTS.
