F1 signs contract with BBS Japan for 2022

F1 Grand Prix of Brazil - Previews

F1 has signed a contract with BBS Japan to integrate the latter into the sport as the official rim supplier for the 2022 season. The coming season with its changes to the regulations is ready to give the sport a new face. The introduction of standardized wheels as part of this aims to encourage closer races and contain development costs.

BBS Japan has reportedly signed four- and three-year contracts with the umbrella organizations of Formula 1 and NASCAR, respectively. The Japanese company operates under the umbrella of the Maedakosen Group. The parent company supplies tires to several luxury car brands in the US and Europe. When the sport moves into the 18-inch bike from next season, this know-how could prove to be a boon for both development and marketing.

Meanwhile, Pirelli carried out tire development tests for the new tires with Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain at the beginning of the year.

Italian manufacturers have been involved in sport since 2011. Before that, however, the teams had the opportunity to use different tires from different companies – from Michelin to Bridgestone to Goodyear.

F1 test key dates 2022

With the new regulations coming into effect this year, the cars that will compete in the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20th will be very different from those that finished in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December. The aerodynamic revision of the sport, postponed due to the pandemic, will take effect this year.

None of the 10 teams have confirmed their individual start date. Expect almost all of their 2022 cars to be unveiled in the week leading up to the testing opening day. Some teams may not reveal the car until the first day it rolls out of the garage.

F1 has planned six days of testing this year, spread over two different venues: Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona and Sakhir International Circuit in Bahrain. Bahrain will host the season opening race on March 18, one week after the completion of the second test.
