F1 News: Lewis Hamilton explains why Ferrari's "dream" move never came about

Lewis Hamilton has admitted that driving for Ferrari has always been his “dream” and is unsure why the move to the Italian team has never happened in his career.

The seven-time world champion celebrated his 100th Formula 1 race victory at the Russian Grand Prix last weekend and is the most successful driver in the history of the sport after stints at McLaren and Mercedes.

Hamilton’s continued success in Formula 1 has also contributed to Ferrari’s title slump as the sport’s most successful team has failed to contribute to the World Cup since the Briton’s rookie season in 2007.

The 36-year-old said in an interview with Sky Italia that the fascination of Ferrari and the passion of the Tifosi will always appeal to drivers and that he “will never know exactly why” he did not cross paths at some point during his career .

“When I came to Monza next to the fans for many years, I could hear them say, ‘Come to Ferrari!’ Hamilton said: “It warmed my heart, but it’s pretty amazing that I’ve never driven for Ferrari in so many years.

“Because it is a dream for everyone, a goal to be achieved. It was never really possible and I will never know exactly why.

“I wish them the best and hope that in the near future I will continue to keep them from winning the World Cup. I have a couple of Ferraris at home. I can drive it, but not the Ferrari F1. “

Hamilton signed a contract extension with Mercedes at the start of the season and is committed to the team until 2023.

In the same interview, Hamilton also admitted that he “often” thinks of retirement as he nears the end of his 15th season in Formula 1.

However, the 36-year-old insisted that he remain “hungry” for further successes in the sport before the changes to the regulations in the next season.
