F1 and MotoGP in honor of the late Fausto Gresini on Sunday

F1 and MotoGP to honour late Fausto Gresini on Sunday

Seasoned MotoGP team boss Gresini died in February after a two-month battle against COVID-19.

The Italian, who was 125cc motorcycle Grand Prix World Champion in 1985 and 1987, was a highly respected figure in the world of motorsport. MotoGP observed a moment of silence during the Qatar Grand Prix weekend in March.

Gresini was born in Imola, where the second round of the 2021 F1 season – the Emilia Romagna GP – will take place this weekend.

As a sign of respect for Gresini, both the F1 paddock in Italy and the MotoGP paddock in Portugal will stand together for a minute’s silence.

In a short statement by MotoGP: “As a tribute to the deceased, great Italian, a minute’s silence will be observed on Sunday during both the Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio Del Made in Italy E Dell’emilia Romagna and the MotoGP Grande Premio 888 de Portugal at 1:42 pm in Imola and at 12:42 pm in Portimao.

“At the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo and Dino Ferrari, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is accompanied by members of the von Gresini family in the Parc ferme to observe the minute’s silence.

“At the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, the motorcycles, drivers and team members of the Gresini teams of the MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 classes will gather in front of the Gresini box of the Aprilia Racing Team before the MotoGP
™
race, together with FIM- President Jorge Viegas and Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports to pay their respects. “

The Gresini team continued the race in 2021 and plans to return to MotoGP independent status in 2022.

The Aprilia – whose factory entry takes place in cooperation with Gresini Racing – RS-GPs by Aleix Espargaro and Lorenzo Savadori pay tribute to the late Gresini this season.

F1 announced earlier this week that it had postponed its Imola round qualifications to avoid conflict with the funeral of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, who died last week at the age of 99.

Due to the royal funeral, there are no changes to the MotoGP schedule this weekend. However, the MotoGP race will take place on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. local time before Moto2 to avoid a conflict with the F1 race.
