Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali has admitted that he tried to sign Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari when he was the team’s boss.
During the period in which Domenicali ran Ferrari’s F1 operations from 2008 to 2014, Hamilton competed with McLaren before moving to Mercedes in 2013.
The seven-time world champion recently spoke about the prospect of joining the Maranello squad and admitted it was “crazy” to think he wouldn’t compete for the team.
Speaking to Sky Sports, when asked if he had ever tried to sign Hamilton, Domenicali said, “To be honest, yes. This is true. We discussed that.
“I think the answer Lewis was able to give is the right one. Today I think that that time is over.
“There is one movie that I remember fondly sometimes, ‘Sliding Doors’. There are moments when you stay on the ground when you are not getting on an elevator.
“I don’t know. That was the situation Lewis was going through at that particular time in his life. I think that [we] At least he can’t blame his choice because he has had an incredible career. “
Friday, October 1st, was the 15th anniversary of Michael Schumacher’s last victory in Formula 1, which was considered a record for 14 years before Hamilton grabbed his record last year.
Hamilton also has the potential to beat Schumacher’s record of seven world titles this year – an achievement Domenicali applauds.
“I think records are meant to be broken,” said Domenicali. “I think there was incredible respect for what Lewis achieved.
“Michael did something back then, I remember we all said ‘this is something that is impossible’ [to beat]’.
“That’s the beauty of sport. There is always someone [who can do] We keep in mind what others could do beforehand in order to keep the motivation even higher.
“I’m pretty sure Michael was an incredible reference for Lewis. Lewis can be a great reference for other drivers. “
