Charles Leclerc Reveals Ferrari SF90 Gift Was Part of F1 Contract Negotiation

Charles Leclerc recently received a heartwarming gift from his dream team, Ferrari. And it was none other than the S90 that brought him his first two wins in Formula 1 in 2019. At first it looked like Monegasque had been surprised by this surprise from the Italian team.

During the Emilia Romagna GP press conference, Leclerc announced that he had requested Ferrari for the S90 in his contract request. Ultimately, he was happy that Ferrari had managed to grant his wish.

“Well, there is no real background. It’s obvious that after my first year at Ferrari and myself I stepped down for a new contract that was much longer, ”he said. “And one of my wishes was this. And Ferrari was kind enough to accept it. “

Leclerc joined the team in 2019 on a one-year contract. Just weeks later, however, Ferrari confirmed that Monegasque had signed a major deal that extended his stint for a whopping five years until the end of the 2024 F1 season. This suggested that the Leclerc and Leclerc relationship just couldn’t get any better at Ferrari. And the reality was exactly the same: Leclerc showed his racing skills in the Maranello outfit in the first season and scored two impressive victories in Monza and Spa.

A memory I would keep forever: Leclerc

Leclerc reckoned that owning the S90 would be a memory he would cherish forever as the car symbolized his very first race win in F1.

“I’m very happy because obviously it’s a memory that I would keep forever,” he said. “It’s exactly the chassis that Monza and Spa won, my two victories in Formula 1. So it’s a very special car for me.”

2019 was the last time Ferrari dreamed of winning the title. It’s been a case of decline since then, having won zero races in the 2020 season and only secured three podiums.

And it’s not surprising that 2021 is the revival phase for Leclerc and his team, with new engines roaring in the back of the car. The team showed signs of improvement in Bahrain and secured a second-row start.
