Carlos Sainz praises the “unforgettable” first Ferrari F1 test

Sainz hails ‘unforgettable’ maiden Ferrari F1 test run

At the start of the season in Bahrain at the end of March, the 26-year-old will be only the third Spanish Formula 1 racing driver in the Scuderia after Marquis Alfonso de Portago and Fernando Alonso.

His 2021 teammate, Charles Leclerc, who tested the car yesterday, and the father of WRC legend Carlos Sainz Snr were there to watch him from the pits before Leclerc set out to assemble seats in the Scuderia’s vehicle assembly department.

“A day I’ll never forget!” Said Sainz. “This morning the alarm went off at dawn because we had some very early meetings before we went out on the track. One of the special moments for me today was when I got to the track and saw the Ferrari with my number 55 on it! I really wanted to jump in the car and the first round of installation was exciting.

“Then we got down to work and I’m very happy with how the day went. We were able to go through an extensive program and I was able to familiarize myself with the entire setup: the engineers and mechanics, the steering wheel, the processes, which are of course a little different from the car I drove last season.

“It was very nice to have my father with me at such an important moment in my career. And I would like to thank Mattia, Laurent and everyone at Ferrari for such a warm welcome and such a positive first day in the car of 2018. I’m very happy and couldn’t have asked for a better start. “

Sainz will drive the car again on Thursday morning before handing over Mick Schumacher to Haas F1 in the afternoon. Test driver Callum Ilott will complete his week-long program on Friday afternoon.
