Callum Ilott, the 2020 Formula 2 runner-up, makes IndyCar debut in Portland

What a difference a year makes for Callum Ilott.

A year ago, Ilott fought with Mick Schumacher and Yuki Tsunoda for the Formula 2 championship and was right in the middle of the silly rumor mill of the season about a possible appearance in Formula 1.

This year Ilott is not competing for a championship, but serves as the second substitute driver for Alfa Romeo in Formula 1 and as a Ferrari test driver.

Ilott will soon have another line for his résumé. The 22-year-old Briton will contest his NTT IndyCar Series for Juncos Hollinger Racing at the Portland Grand Prix on September 12th. Ilott will drive the team’s first IndyCar Series entry in the 2021 season.

Ilott will drive the No. 77 Chevrolet.

“I am delighted and am happy to announce that I will compete with Juncos Hollinger Racing in Portland,” said Ilott. “This will be my first time in the NTT IndyCar Series and in the United States, which will be a bit of a change from the European side. I look forward to working with the team in this first phase of their development and am proud to be part of this opportunity to incorporate into their future work.

“I would like to thank the Ferrari Driver Academy for giving me this opportunity and Ricardo Juncos and Brad Hollinger for bringing me onto the team.”

Ricardo Juncos and Brad Hollinger announced their partnership to form Juncos Hollinger Racing in early August. The team is committed to running the final three events of the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series season and hopes to compete in the IndyCar Series full-time in 2022.

The team’s most recent IndyCar race was the 2019 Indianapolis 500, in which driver Kyle Kaiser McLaren’s Fernando Alonso defeated for the final qualifying position.

“We are very excited to welcome Callum Ilott to the Juncos Hollinger Racing family,” said Juncos. “Callum brings a lot of experience and incredible talent to the team. We are confident that tomorrow he will have a good start in the NTT IndyCar Series when we hit the track tomorrow for our final test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course before we make our official joint debut in Portland next week. ”

Ilott last started at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2021 and finished third in the LMGTE-Am class with Iron Lynx. At the beginning of the year, the young Briton was used as a test driver by the Ferrari F1 team and appointed as a substitute driver for the Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN F1 team.

In 2020, Ilott finished second behind Schumacher in the F2 championship, where he took three wins, six podiums and five poles.
