Binotto says work on Ferrari’s 2022 car is “advanced” – and is aiming for an engine upgrade this season

There’s still a lot to be done this season but the teams are already looking forward to the sweeping rule changes that will come in 2022, with brand new cars signaling a new era in Formula 1, the strides the Scuderia is making in their next championship challenger power – with a major engine upgrade on the horizon.

Next season brings a complete overhaul of the F1 car, an emphasis on the ground effect, redesigned nose and wings, and much more to create a spectacle with more overtaking maneuvers in 2022. And the work on Ferrari’s new car, says Binotto.

“2022 is moving forward and that’s the time when you usually freeze the chassis geometries and the whole concept of the car, the suspension layout and the cooling layout, so let’s say the concept is certainly very advanced,” he said.

“While the concept is frozen, the chassis is in production. It’s time to keep working on the body shape, aerodynamics, wings, body etc and no doubt we are doing a lot of work on the drive unit – the drive unit will be brand new in concept and design next year… ”added he added.

Ferrari finished runner-up in the championship in 2017-19 but dropped to sixth place in 2020

Also in the works is an engine upgrade for this season which Ferrari hopes will help them get some performance gains.

He continued, “It will be important for us to take the most important step we can, knowing that this is somehow the ultimate performance gap on the aggregate.

“The aim is to limit this disadvantage, to close it. That is why we are working hard on the engine and this is a key moment when you not only find performance but also have to fully homologate the product’s reliability next season.”

When the engine upgrade in anger will be ready to go, the Scuderia boss outlined some of the challenges they face – and no race would determine when it will be ready.

“We’re working very hard to get it ready as soon as possible,” he said.

“It’s a technology change on the hybrid side. In order to introduce them, we first have to transport the materials and, as dangerous goods, we need full homologations and certifications for this, so it is not just about developing the hybrid system on the test benches and somehow proving the reliability, but there are many aspects that need to be addressed so that they are available on the right track.

“No race has been decided at the moment. It will be as soon as possible because we believe that for the next season it will be interesting to do it as often as possible this season. Hopefully it will be in the next races, and very soon, ”concluded Binotto.

The Scuderia arrives at the Russian Grand Prix this weekend, 13.5 points behind the third McLaren in the overall standings.
