Bernie Ecclestone: “Ferrari are Formula 1”

Bernie Ecclestone

Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, who sat under Enzo Ferrari’s learning tree, says Ferrari is Formula 1.

Often referred to as the “F1 Supremo” in his Formula 1 days, Ecclestone was the sport’s managing director for 40 years after leading the Brabham team in the 1970s and 80s. After Liberty Media took over the sport, he was removed from his position as managing director in January 2017.

Ecclestone always made a controversial figure during his time in Formula 1, but sometimes feels like he is being misunderstood.

“Sometimes I phrase things in such a way that they are not understood the way I meant them,” he told GQ Magazine.

“I’m in a bit of anger, but I can honestly say that a person is a person to me.

“I take people as I see them. It doesn’t matter what color you are or whether you are a man or a woman, your religion or nationality, whether you are rich or poor, your politics. Look at me, I’m below average, but I don’t feel bad about it. I am just like someone who is taller.

“In fact, I feel more comfortable in an airplane seat than someone who is taller. Everything has something positive about it. Nothing is all bad. “

But someone Ecclestone had a fantastic relationship with was the late Enzo Ferrari, founder of the famous Scuderia Ferrari outfit.

The Formula 1 World Championship was first held in 1950, and Ferrari has been part of every one ever since. In Ecclestone’s eyes, Ferrari is simply Formula 1.

“Mr [Enzo] Ferrari. He was very special and helped me a lot, ”said the Briton when asked which person he admired the most.

“He taught me that sport is on the table and business is underneath. Formula 1 is Ferrari and Ferrari is Formula 1. It’s that simple. Colin Chapman was someone else. He was a genius. A very fast driver too. “

When asked if there are any parts of Formula 1 that he misses, Ecclestone replied, “I miss some of the deals, especially with the promoters on some of the circuits – some might have gone under if we hadn’t been involved and helped a little – and doing business with some of the big sponsors who have renewed themselves for decades. I watch the races. And I still get one or two calls for advice. “
