Aramco F1 in Schools World Champions 2020/21 will be crowned next month

Inspiring designs, innovative engineering, outstanding creativity, nail-biting nerves and heart-warming team bonds are just some of the many facets of the pinnacle of F1® in Schools, its annual World Finals.

Aramco F1 in Schools World Champions 2020/21 will be crowned next month

The 16th Aramco F1® in Schools World Finals, to be held from 4 – 8 June this year at the F1® in Schools UK headquarters, is revving up, with 280 competitors from 43 teams from across the globe ready to be on the grid in the largest STEM challenge in the world.

With less than two weeks until they are on track, it’s a race to the wire as the teams put the finishing touches to their entries and prepare to showcase their talents for the ultimate glory of being crowned World Champions.

The Aramco F1® in Schools World Finals 2020 (21) will combine a live racing event with Zoom-powered presentations to create an immersive, interactive world class competition.

All the World Finals teams have designed, tested and manufactured model F1® in Schools cars, used project management tools, created engineering and enterprise portfolios and developed sponsorship and marketing campaigns, learning new STEM skills along the way. Across the packed five-day schedule, judged activities, head-to-head racing and technical analysis will culminate in the crowning of the new World Champions.

“Aramco is proud to serve as title sponsor of the F1 in Schools World Finals, not only because of our commitment to support STEM growth in new and exciting ways, but because we see in these bright young students the very same passion for engineering and innovation that drives our work.

As they think outside the box to build a better race car, they inspire us all with their ingenuity. In turn, we hope to inspire them to use their talents to change the world,” Fahad Dhubaib, General Manager Public Affairs, Aramco.

The innovations and enterprise shown by the students in the pursuit of success is phenomenal. A collaboration team from Malaysia and China developed a new type of plastic to build the wings and wheels of their cars, a team from India has created a Car Motion Calculator app to help new teams test their car concepts and an American team designed a rear wheel diffuser – just three of many, many inventions that will be showcased next month.

The Aramco F1® in Schools World Finals 2020 (21) will be hosted from the F1® in Schools World Finals studio, by F1® Esports Series presenter Tom Deacon and will be formally opened by Amin H. Nasser, CEO, Aramco on 4 June, with an Opening Show broadcast live on F1® in Schools YouTube channel. This will be the first time that all the student teams meet each other, although unlike usual World Finals, it will be virtually via Zoom.

Two days of time trial racing and judging sessions for the students, with a knockout racing competition to close, will decide the final positions at the chequered flag. Celebrating the new World Champions will be the finale of this year’s competition, hosted from the F1® in Schools World Finals studio, with the audience joining by Zoom to watch the announcement of the 22 award winners and the podium finishers, as the  outstanding achievements of the future engineers and professionals of the Formula 1 industry are rewarded.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman, F1® in Schools, says, “I
t has been a huge task to bring together our World Finals team, although this year it will be via the technology of Zoom, rather than our acclaimed live events held at international Grands Prix. It will, of course, be different but we have a packed schedule of events, activities and live action, with special guests throughout the course of the competition.”

“Our STEM competition and education programme nurtures and develops young students to realise their ambitions, and the World Finals showcases talent from so many countries and in so many different areas of STEM.

Aramco F1 in Schools World Champions 2020/21 will be crowned next month

They are all hugely passionate students who have been able to channel their enthusiasm into F1 in Schools to learn, develop and, in many cases, realise their future.  I look forward to a closely fought competition and I know there will be worthy winners on the top step of the podium.”

UCL Mechanical Engineering scholarships are on offer to the World Champions, as well as the prized F1® in Schools World Champions trophy. The Aramco F1®® in Schools World Finals is held with the support of a host of sponsors including Formula 1®, Aramco, Zoom, Autodesk, Denford, FIA Women in Motorsport, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, UCL Engineering and FIA Action for Road Safety.

 About F1 in Schools

Andrew Denford, an entrepreneurial engineer working within the education sector, founded the F1 in Schools STEM Challenge in the UK in 2000. He implemented a STEM programme that uses the high profile, glamorous and high-tech world of fast cars and Formula 1 to engage and inspire students, introducing them to engineering in a compelling and unique competition. Today this world-leading global educational initiative operates in 54 countries.

Researching, designing, making and racing an F1 car of the future is at its core.  Teams then race head-to-head on the F1 in Schools 20 metre racetrack. The challenge can be used as an education tool or hook to engage students in STEM subjects as well as giving them the opportunity to develop key skills such as communication, presenting and teamwork, forming a foundation for any career path they choose to follow.

This Formula 1 supported global STEM programme is also a proven route to motorsport and automotive careers with former participants working in Formula 1 teams, engine manufacturers, sports agencies and many more allied companies.
