After the pointless start to the 2021 season, Alpine is bringing a “pretty decent upgrade package” for the next Formula 1 race in Imola.
The renamed Enstone squad failed to score at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix as returning two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was eliminated with overheated brakes while the race was ruined by Esteban Ocon after being rammed by Sebastian Vettel.
In order to increase its competitiveness, Alpine managing director Marcin Budkowski has confirmed that the team will introduce a major upgrade for its A521 car at the second race of the season in Italy.
“There is an area that has been changed in the regulations that is currently under development,” said Budkowski. “It’s obviously the side of the bottom and the diffuser.
“We did some work during the test and we did some work here [in Bahrain]and no doubt we will work more in the next few races. Everyone else will too. It is an area that will change.
“We have a pretty decent upgrade package for Imola, so we’re going to have more new parts and more power for the car in Imola. And in general, some new things will come through in the first few races of the season. “

Alpine struggled for pace in the hotter Bahrain weekend temperatures compared to its midfield rivals, and Budkowski admitted the French manufacturer “has a little less than two or three tenths to actually fight the people we are fighting wanted to”.
“Behind [Red Bull and Mercedes]You have McLaren that was strong, AlphaTauri was strong, Ferrari was strong – a bit stronger than we expected, ”he added.
“Then there we are and Aston Martin, so that’s the starting grid if you want. I think this group with McLaren, with Ferrari, with AlphaTauri, with us and Aston Martin and even with Alfa Romeo – they weren’t far either – this group is very, very close.

“It’s almost like P5 and P6 to P16, it will be tight, circuit to circuit, conditions to conditions, it will be variable. Our goal is to be in front, not back, and right now we’re somewhere in the middle and we only have a few tenths to be in front.
“The next race could be different and it will be interesting to see because people are going to develop their cars a little bit but not that long in the season because the 22 regulations are coming, so it will be interesting. The midfield will be very, very competitive all season. “
