The wet weather cost many drivers a lot of money at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday. But not on their own. Valtteri Bottas’ misjudged braking meant that many drivers fell out of the race, many came from midfield. This gave Lewis Hamilton a chance to storm to victory, but Esteban Ocon and the rest of the grid had different thoughts. Everyone except the British pitted for slicks and it worked a treat, allowing the alpine driver to lead the race and claim his first Formula 1 victory. However, Hamilton was still second as Sebastian Vettel was disqualified.
McLaren maintained its lead in the battle for third place in Great Britain with an outstanding performance from Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. The duo scored 22 points for the British team, but lost points to Ferrari thanks to Charles Leclerc. With second place for the Monegasque driver and sixth place for Carlos Sainz, Scuderia was able to make up four points behind McLaren. Alpine had the best performance of the rest last week, scoring eight points and moving closer to Aston Martin and AlphaTauri. It was a quiet race at Silverstone for the domestic and Italian teams as Lance Stroll took four points while Yuki Tsunoda was last on the points.
Now that our weekend in Hungary is over, which team is leading?
Ferrari
A tie for third place before the summer break is another thing that many would not expect at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Now we are done in Budapest, we see that it is exactly like that. Vettel’s DSQ led Sainz to third place, secured a podium and three extra points and moved the Scuderia to third place. A strong strategy by the Italian team allowed the Spaniard to fight for the podium for most of the race. Leclerc was torpedoed by Stroll at turn one and his race was over very soon.
McLaren
Nobody would have thought of a pointless day for McLaren in Hungary, especially with Norris’ outstanding form this season. In fact, it was a pointless day for the British team. The young Brit had an excellent start to the race, overtaking Bottas off the line, but the Finn’s misjudged braking resulted in him crashing into the rear of Norris and ending his and many other driver races. As for Ricciardo, the Aussie just couldn’t find a bigger pace in the car and was out of the top 10 for most of the race. In the end, he lost points because Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen overtook him on the final laps. McLaren is now with Ferrari on 163 points.
alpine
What a weekend for Alpine. Ocon, Grand Prix winner. The team couldn’t have asked for much more. Much of the thanks, however, is attributed to the defensive work of Fernando Alonso, who kept Hamilton behind for 10 laps and enabled Ocon to maintain his lead. After overtaking the Spaniard, Hamilton was just 2.7 seconds behind the Frenchman, which could easily have been won if Alonso hadn’t defended that long. They get 37 points for the French team ahead of AlphaTauri and Aston Martin and make them Grand Prix winners again this season.
AlphaTauri
The one point lead over Aston Martin has now been expanded to 20 thanks to the mega performances of Pierre Gasly and Tsunoda. The duo finished fifth and sixth, Gasly scored an extra point with the fastest race lap. The duo drove in the top 10 for most of the race and luckily missed the incident after the lights went out. A performance of 19 points is more than what the Italian team would have wished for at the weekend.
Aston Martin
A race of ups and downs for Aston Martin ended in a surprise. Vettel’s bad start meant that the German had easily survived the serious fall at the beginning of the race. This meant he could fight with Ocon in the lead for the 70 laps, which he did. He couldn’t get past the Frenchman and crossed the finish line in second. However, since Vettel did not have enough fuel in the car for the test drives at the end of the race, Vettel was disqualified and his P2 was deducted. As for Stroll, a flying train knocked out Leclerc in the first round, ruining his and many other breeds.
Special mention: Williams
Williams is still 38 points behind Aston Martin, but in a weekend full of drama and action, the British team’s success in Hungary cannot go unnoticed. Nicholas Latifi and George Russell both secured points for the team and got 10 points. These are the first points in F1 and Williams for the Canadian, while Russell gets his first points for the team after two and a half years. An excellent drive by the duo gives the team its first points since Robert Kubica at the 2019 German Grand Prix.
