Who is in the lead after the British Grand Prix?

Who is in the lead after the British Grand Prix?

The whole drama of yesterday’s British Grand Prix involved the front-runners at the start and end of the race, but the midfield performed well behind the leaders. It was Charles Leclerc who had a performance as driver of the day and only crossed the finish line behind race winner Lewis Hamilton. However, many believe the Ferrari driver should have won the race after Hamilton received only minor penalties for knocking out Max Verstappen on the first lap. The second place of the Monegasque was somewhat neutralized by a strong performance by the McLaren duo Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo.

McLaren were at the top last week and thanks to Norris they were on the podium again in Austria. 21 points were secured for the British team, with Ricciardo finishing in the top 10 and McLaren helping to extend their lead over rival Ferrari. Despite losing a few points to McLaren, Ferrari had a great weekend with Carlos Sainz and Leclerc who drove a great Austrian Grand Prix. AlphaTauri’s rookie Yuki Tsunoda struggled and the Italian team relied on Pierre Gasly to secure all points again. Aston Martin scored zero points for the fourth time this season and finished the race with Sebastian Vettel, who was whirled around by Kimi Raikkonen. Alpine veteran Fernando Alonso was the goalscorer for the French team and helped them close the gap on their British rivals.

Now that our weekend in the UK is over, which team is leading?

McLaren

McLaren lost a possible podium due to a slow stop in the pits, which resulted in the team scoring fewer points than their Italian rival Ferrari. However, this was neutralized thanks to a fourth and fifth place from Norris and Ricciardo. The young Brit was temporarily second in the race, but lost the fight with Bottas due to a pit stop mistake. However, this didn’t stop the 21-year-old from putting on a show in front of his home crowd, as he now overtook Sergio Perez in third place in the drivers’ standings. Ricciardo secured his best result of the season with a fantastic drive when he overtook Sainz for the last top five place. Despite losing four points to Scuderia, the British team will consider their performance yesterday in front of 140,000 cheering fans a success.

Ferrari

What a day for the dancing horses. A podium for Leclerc and a fantastic drive to sixth from Sainz secured 26 points for the Italian team, the best result of the season. Leclerc led the race from the start, but had to give way to Hamilton on lap 50 in the Copse corner. I think many believe he wouldn’t risk a fight in the same corner that Verstappen next flew into the barrier with Hamilton in front of him. Although he didn’t win the race, second place for Leclerc will only bring confidence for him. Four points ahead of McLaren at the British Grand Prix will keep the atmosphere in the Ferrari garage high.

AlphaTauri

It was a surprise day for AlphaTauri on Sunday, but maybe not as exciting as expected. Gasly fought throughout the race and was shown in black and white in the early stages. This made the French driver cautious and meant that he could only beat 11th place. However, it wasn’t a pointless weekend for the Italian team as Yuki Tsunoda stormed into tenth place. The rookie qualified 16th and won six places throughout the race. On the flip side, Aston Martin closed the gap to just one point and we could see AlphaTauri being overtaken by their British rivals on the Hungaroring.

Aston Martin

Most of the action for Aston Martin at the British Grand Prix was Vettel’s spinning in the middle stages of the race. The German followed Raikkonen, lost the rear of his car and was turned into the old pit lane. Vettel was able to continue, but had to give up late in the race. Stroll, on the other hand, had a quiet race and secured his sixth point of the season. His eighth place equaled his top ranking of the year and closed the gap to just one behind AlphaTauri. After the race, Vettel helped clean the grandstands and drove to Silverstone this morning to see how the clean-up was going. Chapeau Seb!

alpine

Alpine is now just eight points behind Aston Martin as both drivers finished in the top 10 at Silverstone yesterday. Alonso’s eighth place and Ocon’s ninth place helped the French team close the gap to their British rivals by four points. This was Ocon’s first score since Monaco and could potentially mark the turning point of the French and his team’s season.
