Weight is a key factor in Aston Martin’s optimized green F1 livery

The Silverstone-based team has started looking at a possible tweak to its green paint job for 2022, with the dark Pantone not being as good as it was initially hoped for.

While the team was happy with the way the green looked in real life, the colors on TV didn’t come across as well.

And especially when the cameras were recording the light, the dark Aston Martin was often difficult to distinguish from the black Mercedes from certain angles.

Earlier this year, team boss Otmar Szafnauer said the type of greens used on his car would be reconsidered.

“I think it’s a stunning color in the sun and when you look at it in person,” he said.

“But I think we should try to make it stand out a bit more on TV without losing the green when you look at it outside.

“I don’t know if we can do that, but that’s one thing we want to do just to make sure it differs from some of the other darker cars on TV.”

Talks at Aston Martin about the 2022 paint job and choice of green began this week at the Silverstone plant.

But it is clear to Szafnauer that the team must carefully weigh every change to the green and, above all, cannot make a choice based on the appearance if it gives the car too much weight.

Asked by Autosport about the current paint job situation, Szafnauer explained that one of the team’s main problems for 2022 was getting closer to the minimum weight limit.

“We have just started looking at it,” said Szafnauer in a media talk before the United States Grand Prix.

“We had a meeting with the senior team and started talking about the paintwork for next year and how much of the car we will paint with what color next year.

“But weight is also an important factor. We need to take as much weight off as possible. So we’re at it right now.”

Aston Martin is not alone in the battle to get its car close to the minimum weight limit for 2022.

New regulations, increased crash test requirements as well as larger wheels and brakes have led to an increase in vehicle mass – and in the age of cost caps, the teams are reluctant to have to use expensive weight-saving materials.

The latest update to the F1 regulations for 2022 released this week has raised the minimum weight to 792kg for next year, but teams still believe this will be difficult to achieve.
