Walk: F1's Sprint Qualifying Format Could Make "Boring" Races | F1

F1 tested its sprint qualifying format for the first time at the British Grand Prix last weekend.

The format received mixed reviews, with fans hailing three days of meaningful action while the sprint didn’t add much more action besides Fernando Alonso’s jaw-dropping opening lap.

The scheduling of the weekend with the decision to organize a training session between qualifying and the sprint, which was pointless in view of the Parc Ferme conditions, was also criticized.

After finishing eighth on Sunday, Stroll believes that the free choice of tires could lead to less exciting races for everyone.

“Yes, I think you need to reconsider that, but it could lead to boring races. Strategies can be pretty straightforward when everyone has a free choice of tires, ”said Stroll. “So maybe they need to rethink this, but we’ll see how the next sprint racing events go.

“I think we have to see how it goes in the next sprint races. There are definitely some changes I would make to the schedule. This weekend there was a lot of waiting on Friday, we started very late and then only one free practice – maybe there is an opportunity to do two free practice sessions before qualifying.

“Maybe they can lengthen the first a little to create a little tire delta and then throw in the mandatory soft start or qualifying tire start for the main race, which messes up the strategy because I see races are pretty boring when” We always see the same strategy between all cars. “
