Vettel’s driving style isn’t as extreme as Perez, says Aston Martin

Vettel's driving style isn't as extreme as Perez, says Aston Martin

The four-time F1 world champion Vettel has joined the renamed Aston Martin team after a difficult last season with Ferrari for 2021 and replaces Perez.

Vettel finished a low 13th place in the championship for Ferrari and achieved only one podium and just under a third of the total points of teammate Charles Leclerc.

Repeated mistakes by Vettel in recent years led to questions about how well Ferrari’s cars fit his driving style, which is supposed to be dependent on a stable rear end.

But Aston Martin technical director Andrew Green said there was no concern about housing Vettel with his new AMR21 car as he believed his driving style wasn’t as extreme as Perez’s.

“Yes sir, [Vettel] has its own personal driving style, but it’s no different from the driving styles we know from other drivers, “said Green.

“I would say [it’s] not as extreme as the driver he is replacing who had a very extreme driving style that was very difficult to come by on all tracks. It was lit on certain tracks and not on others.

“I think Seb’s style is a lot less extreme. And we have the tools and the ability to set the car up for him safely.

“We have already started working on it. We have been working on it in the simulator for the last month. And he seems very happy with the directions we are taking. So, yes, there are no problems.”

Vettel got his first taste of his new Aston Martin F1 car during a brief shakedown at Silverstone last week.

While Vettel was curious to get an idea of the car concept that Aston Martin has after a long time at Ferrari, he preferred to dispel the myth about his need for a sturdy rear end.

“I think the whole thing with the rear got a little out of hand,” said Vettel.

“If you look at the cars I had at Red Bull, or the early days of Ferrari, I think there were always times when the rear was nervous and that’s fine.

“I don’t think I am more vulnerable than the others in this regard. If anything, I don’t like it when the car really just understeers, because at least you can do a lot with oversteer.

“There are also some driving techniques with understeer, but the hands are a little tied or a little more restricted. So actually I prefer it when the car is a little looser, it really helps you turn and so on.

“Of course you lose a lot of time when it gets too much. And then nobody likes that because it’s slow.

“But when I come back to philosophy, I find it interesting. The way it sounds, it’s very different. I hope it suits me. We’ll see how it goes. “
