Vettel will acquire shares in Aston Martin before the move in 2021

Vettel acquires shares in Aston Martin ahead of 2021 move

Vettel will join the team currently known as Racing Point next season after Ferrari announced earlier this year that he would not be kept.

The announcement of his move last month came after several weeks of negotiations with Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll.

Vettel declined to provide details of his stake in the company, which trades on the London Stock Exchange as Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings plc.

While it is obviously related to his deal to join the team, it’s not clear whether his stake is part of his compensation or was bought on the open market and is actually a vote of confidence from the former world champion in the brand.

Vettel is seen by Stroll as a key element in Aston’s marketing push in the years to come as it seeks to recover from its current downturn. The share price fell earlier this year, but has stabilized over the past few weeks.

Mercedes has a 5% stake in Aston, while the German manufacturer’s F1 team boss, Toto Wolff, a close friend of Stroll, is also personally involved.

“I think everyone can do what they want with their money,” said Vettel when he was asked by Motorsport.com whether he could take over shares in the company.

“And I know Aston Martin is a public company and anyone can invest in the company.

“So if you ask if I have any stake in the company, I have but how much I think it’s a minor matter and I won’t talk about it.

“But I think I believe in the project. I’ve obviously decided on the project and I’m excited to see what happens when we start next year. And I’m starting with a new team.”

Vettel was also asked if he regretted possibly not driving current Racing Point driver Sergio Perez for next season.

“Obviously not that many places are open yet,” he said. “I don’t know if Checo is talking to anyone. So I don’t know if he’s definitely outside.

“You make the news, so I think you know a little more than I do, or at least earlier than I do. But I think it would be a shame. He’s the driver who deserves to be in Formula One. Now I don’t know what options he has or what he would like to do. “
