Vettel warns F1 against "neglecting" staff with calendars

F1 is ready to announce a 23-lap plan for next season at next week’s FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting.

In an interview with Sky Sports this week, F1 CEO and President Stefano Domenicali confirmed that the 2022 season will consist of the most races in the history of the World Championship.

It’s expected to be a severely crowded calendar that could include up to eight additional sprint races at 23 events between mid-March and mid-November, meaning the prospect of multiple double and triple headers is likely.

Teams have raised concerns about a crowded calendar after a second year of COVID-19 disruption, and Aston Martin driver Vettel is concerned that F1 risks are ignoring the human cost of an even busier schedule.

“We now see that it is an immense task and we must not neglect that we are a group of people and people who travel around the world,” said the four-time world champion on the Thursday before the Turkey Grand Prix this weekend .

“You can do the numbers. You have 52 weekends a year when we race 23 of them and a couple of months a year when we can’t race in most places in the world, that obviously gives you a very intense season .

“The goal should be that we make our season sustainable, not only in terms of the environment, but also in terms of human resources.

“When there are so many people involved and the weekends are much longer than the Saturday Sundays we see on TV for most of the team. I think the drivers are lucky.

“It should be kept in such a way that these people can lead a normal life outside of their jobs. Most of them, be they engineers or mechanics, employees in the team, they have a family or children that they want to look after.

“So we have to be very careful where we want to place our interests.”

McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo shared Vettel’s fears, adding, “It’s really important for the team to have close relationships with other members of the team as we’ve been separated from families for a long time, especially with the triple heads.

“So you have to rely on your teammates to help you if you are a little on the floor or miss your home or whatever it is.

“I really hope that the world will open up further next year and that we can interact more with the team. Not only on the track, but also at some events and dinners, and I think about this social life outside of the paddock to have a race weekend. ” also helps to break the weekend.

“This is an important time to switch off and relieve travel stress and homesickness. Those are some of the keys to making it a little easier. ”
