The four-time world champion believed that the Alpine F1 would have been much faster at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. After qualifying P5 on Saturday, Esteban Ocon fell to P9, while Fernando Alonso fell to P17 after qualifying P10. This achievement produced two different sides to Alpine, which surprised Vettel.

The German said: “Today I was a bit surprised by the Alps, they weren’t very fast in the race. I expected them to be faster because they were so much faster yesterday. “
Alpine was quick on the Sunday race weekends leading up to the Spanish Grand Prix, with Ocon and Alonso finishing higher than their starting positions. Barcelona turned out to be a different story, however.
SUBMERGED DEPTH
The midfield fight is tight: Vettel
McLaren and Ferrari are really fighting for third place this season. However, Aston Martin and Alpine F1 cannot be counted just yet. Vettel believes it’s possible to find the extra tenth or two, which can make all the difference in this extremely close fight.

The German said: “I think we can see that it is very close. Every weekend is a little different. And when it’s so tight, when you’re feeling a little more comfortable, the car maybe better suited to the track, you’ll find a tenths or two more. “
The midfield battle continues in the streets of Monaco. Expect fireworks on Saturday as the teams battle for track position in qualifying, which is vital at the Monaco Grand Prix. Despite having won twice here, Vettel is far from the grid at the moment and the Astons could have a tough outing in the principality.
