Vettel has dropped from eighth to eleventh on the grid and is handing over the spots to George Russell, his own Aston Martin team-mate Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz Jr, while also receiving a penalty point.
Alonso was furious after ruining his final lap in the Q2 session when he found Vettel in the final two corners, himself trapped behind other cars. Alonso qualified for 14th on the grid after showing good pace at the start of the session.
Vettel was about to start his own flying lap and had to abort it when trying to get out of the way. However, it still reached Q3.
Valtteri Bottas and Sainz were both investigated for unnecessarily slow driving, but the stewards decided not to take any further action against the couple.
The stewards stated: “Alonso was on his fast lap just before the end of Q2. As he neared the last two corners (9 and 10) there was still a line of 3 cars preparing for their final qualifying lap. VET was the last car in this line and hindered Alonso so that Alons had to abandon his final qualifying lap.
Vettel was frustrated that the “gentleman’s agreement” not to overtake in qualifying laps was seemingly ignored by some of his rivals, especially after the FIA issued a crackdown on drivers involved in the final two corners, Turn 9 and, slowed down and made a gap 10.
“We agreed that we would slow down between eight and nine, which I did,” he said when asked by Autosport.

Vettel stated that he had sacrificed his own round when he realized that Alonso was coming.
