Vettel criticizes UEFA's "wrong" decision to ban pride colors at Euro 2020

UEFA has prevented attempts by the Munich government to light up the German national football stadium in proud colors in support of LGBTQ + rights, ahead of the Euro 2020 game between Germany and Hungary last night.

The proposed gesture should be an act of solidarity in response to Hungary passing an anti-gay law that bans the representation and promotion of homosexuality among under 18s in the country.

UEFA stuck to its decision to block the rainbow colors, which resulted in a day of protests in Germany.

In the run-up to the Styrian Grand Prix this weekend, Vettel asked the institutions to “rethink” their approach to banning such messages.

“I don’t know all the details, but I think apologizing as a political message is the wrong way to go in my opinion,” he said.

“It definitely doesn’t harm anyone and I think it’s great news that they would have liked to have sent that wasn’t allowed.

“I think some institutions need to rethink their approach to banning these types of messages. As I said, it is definitely the right way and I did not understand it. “

The German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer showed his support for the LGBT + community during the EM 2020 by wearing a rainbow-colored captain’s armband. Earlier this week, UEFA closed its investigation into Neuer’s armband.

Dutch captain Georginio Wijnaldum will also wear a rainbow armband for his team’s round of 16 game against the Czech Republic in Budapest.
