"The more seat time, the better" - Aston Martin F1 boss Otmar Szafnauer confident of Sebastian Vettel comeback

“The more sitting time, the better” – Aston Martin F1 boss Otmar Szafnauer is confident that Sebastian Vettel will come under the points from the Portuguese GP onwards.

Sebastian Vettel had bad luck in the first two races of the season, especially in Imola. He had problems with the rear brake and the transmission. However, Aston Martin’s F1 team boss Otmar Szafnauer is pleased that he has more racing time the first time he drives a Mercedes car.

“For Seb, the philosophy of the AMR21 is completely different and that takes time to learn. I spoke to Checo [in Imola] and he went to Red Bull, which has a different philosophy than we do, and he said similar things.

“It will be some time before we have the fine margins required to get the most out of the car. The more sitting time, the better.

“He will work tirelessly to get better and to drive this learning curve.”

With a new unit, chassis and a new development philosophy, Sebastian cut out his work, but he is ready for the challenge.

“Seb wasn’t involved in an argument at Imola through no fault of his own, but if you look at his pace on dry tires, it was promising. I think that shows he is slowly getting on the car.

“Seb has very high expectations, he will work tirelessly to get better and move this learning curve forward, but he’s not beating himself. He will take a bit of frustration and be even more determined to get up to speed quickly. “

Aston Martin has got off to a slow start to the season, but it is tough to fight between the 4 midfield aces – the other three are AlphaTauri, Alpine and Alfa Romeo.
