In the battle for 12th place, Tsunoda tried to overtake Stroll at Turn 1 with a late lunge.
Tsunoda was the only rider in the field to start on the soft tires when he tried to get the best out of the gripper rubber with an aggressive maneuver on Stroll.
The Japanese rookie crashed into the side of the Stroll, damaging its own front wing, while severely damaging the Aston Martin’s floor area.
Stroll revealed that the contact initially cost him 25 points of downforce, but the damage got worse as the race progressed and eventually led to his retirement.

“I think he started on soft tires, he has a really fast car so he was super fast on the first few laps,” he said. “I think he’s lost the pace and he’s very desperate to take a step. Just [from] too far back, I don’t know what he was doing. I think he’s just desperate and way too optimistic.
“That contact damaged my car and from then on more parts fell off which meant the pace got worse and we just reversed. I think it started with 25 points [of downforce] and then it was 45 points; Parts that fall from the car onto the track. We just went backwards. “

Tsunoda received a 10-second time penalty for the incident and two points on his driver’s license, bringing his grand total to six points for the 12-month period.
The stewards said the AlphaTauri driver was “entirely to blame,” but Tsunoda was dissatisfied with the severity of the penalty and considered a five-second penalty to be more appropriate.
“Everything was ruined in the collision with Lance Stroll,” explained Tsunoda. “Only, he didn’t look in the rearview mirror, definitely, he just drove normal lines and even me [admit] – it was a risky move – but still I had no lock-up in the first part and I had a bit of lock-up because I let go that he wasn’t looking at all.
“So it’s a shame and that move was there, it was okay, so easy. It’s just a shame. But I have to be strong, be strong again in the next race.
“And a 10 second penalty is absolute – I mean, OK, five seconds, still tough, but OK, 10 seconds is really ridiculous to me. So yes, it is what it is and I have to improve next time. “
