“Not good for the team” – Max Verstappen calls for Perez to end his wingman status at Red Bull F1

“Not good for the team” - Max Verstappen calls for Perez to end his wingman status at Red Bull F1

The Red Bull F1 team has announced that it will continue with the same driver line-up of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen for the upcoming 2022 season. The duo did exceptionally well in the 2021 season and secured Verstappen a narrow second place in the constructors ‘championship and of course the drivers’ title.

More recently in Abu Dhabi, Perez provided a brilliant example of team performance after defending himself like a lion against Lewis Hamilton, leading Verstappen to say, “Checo is a legend.” However, there is a perception in the F1 community that Verstappen is the primary driver for Red Bull and Perez is merely the Dutchman’s winger.

Max Verstappen recently copied this performance. He said the two have the same chances and he doesn’t want to be prioritized on the team.

Max Verstappen praises Perez as the “top guy” in Formula 1

The Mexican had an impressive 2020 F1 season with the Racing Point team. However, the Aston Martin team (Erstwhile Racing Point) did not hold the Mexican for the next season to make way for Vettel. Red Bull took a bold move to have Perez on board, leaving Albon without a seat for the season.

The 24-year-old praised Perez for his driving skills. “I never thought he was so great,” said Verstappen, as reported by GrandPx.

“I used to only know him as a driver, but now that I’ve been spending a little more time with him, I’ve noticed that he really is a top guy,” he added.

Perez isn’t number 2 at Red Bull

The 24-year-old has played with Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon in the past. However, the current pair has brought laurels like no other. When asked whether he was the best “number 2” for him, he immediately clarified his attitude.

“I don’t like to put it that way. In the end we have the same chances. Of course you have to be respected, but I don’t want to be preferred, “said Verstappen promptly.

“I don’t think I need that either and in the end it’s not good for the team if it is always like that,” he concluded.
