F1 commentator Martin Brundle didn’t hear much from Serena Williams when he tried to interview the tennis legend at the US Grand Prix. Brundle, 62, did his famous grid walk before racing for Sky Sports in Austin, his first in two years due to registration restrictions in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
There was no shortage of celebrity guests parading the track ahead of the race, and Brundle thought his luck was in the game when he spotted Williams 40 talking to golf star Rory Mcllroy.
“Let’s wander down here, we have Rory McIlroy and Serena Williams,” Brundle said live on Sky Sports.
“Venus (Williams) didn’t really want to talk to me five years ago, I don’t know if I’ll get a double fault or an ace.”
At that time he could not attract her attention – but he had a second chance when the American and her entourage came up to him.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion smiled but kept walking past the former F1 driver and seemed to signal to her that she had to go somewhere.

However, all hopes Brundle had for a real interview faded a little when he started with a bizarre question: “You are a freestyle rapper, do you have rap for us in Formula 1 today?”
The musician laughed in amusement when she replied: “I don’t have rap today, I’m sorry.”
But when asked who she was supporting for the race, her bodyguard stopped the process and effectively led the commentator away.
However, Brundle then at least had more luck with Mcllroy, who, as a guest of Aston Martin on the Circuit of Americas, liked to talk to Sky Sports in detail.
Brundle congratulated him on his recent CJ Cup win in Las Vegas, but despite his apparent gratitude for participating in the race, it was far from the perfect day for the 32-year-old.
