Vettel himself says he still believes he will be able to put together another championship season.
“I’m not too old, there are now older drivers who come on the grid instead of younger drivers,” said the German at the start last week, before giving his former team a not-so-subtle dig.
“I don’t think it’s a thing of age. I think it’s more about whether you have the car and the team around you. Last year it’s no secret that I wasn’t the happiest. I’m really looking forward to it this year. “
And so he switched to a team that Ferrari exceeded by a fraction of the budget last season, admittedly partly due to Ferrari’s engine problems.
“With a significant improvement in the rear suspension of the Merc 2020 – which was crucial for the performance improvement of Mercedes last year – Aston Martin is the team with the greatest potential for improvement this year,” said Mark Hughes for Motorsport the AMR21 unveiled.
“An update that brings even more stability to the rear sounds exactly like a car with which Vettel can rebuild his reputation.”
“The suspension upgrade is free of the development token spending that each team is limited to in order to contain costs during the pandemic. At Aston, these tokens can then be used for other aspects of the car’s performance.

These tokens were issued to update the chassis for ’21, resulting in a car that was upgraded to a greater extent than other teams were allowed.
This offers another benefit for 2022, which brings new regulations with it. Teams with a fast car earlier this year can switch their efforts to next year’s car earlier to begin the new era ahead of them.

Aston Martin F1 Team
The team that has delivered the consistent performance of the F1 will no longer operate on a tight budget in the years to come, although its time up could actually turn into an advantage once a budget cap is set.
Getting the most out of limited resources and manpower is becoming increasingly important, and there has arguably been no better team than the Silverstone-based company.
The larger teams are restructuring themselves due to the budget ceiling: Minimizing the number of employees while retaining as many important employees as possible. Aston Martin has done that season after season.
Does that make it the best-positioned team ahead of the new regulations that will be introduced next year? It’s unlikely, but Formula 1 has caused bigger surprises.
It is clear, however, that when it comes to title wins, a concerted effort has been made to build a capable team and, under future rules of engagement, there aren’t many better places to approach the new era.
Sergio Perez has proven that the team and the car can occasionally be one of the standout packages in the field. Imagine what a motivated hag could do with a team behind him.
