The brand new Grand Prix winner Esteban Ocon speaks of a tough year 2019. The Frenchman was then sidelined by Racing Point (now Aston Martin) and could not find a place in Formula 1.
Tough year for Ocon
Ocon can still remember it well. In 2019 the Frenchman was a test driver for Mercedes, but hoped to be back in Formula 1 soon. The fast Ocon was out of the picture for a whole year until it was picked up by Renault.
However, he made good use of the year on the sidelines. In his year as a Mercedes test driver, Ocon told RTL “he worked alone in the dark, with no headlights and nobody sees”. “In 2019 I had some real lows. I had doubts whether it would pay off, ”admits Ocon. But the alpine rider believed that one day everything would pay off.

Seize every opportunity
In 2019, Ocon at least made sure that every opportunity is seized to drive an F1 car. “If I show that I am motivated, whether film day or winter test, I am there. When the opportunity presents itself, I jump in the car,” said Ocon.
Eventually, Ocon returned to Formula 1 after just a year. With Renault, he and his team immediately went into the battle for P3 in the championship. Even if that didn’t work out, he can look back on a successful first year in F1.
