The German, who was a super submarine last year after completing three racing weekends at Racing Point, couldn’t land a full-time trip this year but will keep close contact with the series.
On the Austrian broadcaster ServusTV, with whom he will work as an expert in 2021, Hülkenberg said he had signed a contract that should be on call for two teams this year.
“[I will work] as reserve driver for Aston Martin and also for Mercedes in selected races, ”he said.
As previously reported by Autosport, there is demand for Mercedes for events when the regular Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries reserves are unavailable due to conflicts with their Formula E obligations.
There are currently three direct clashes of F1 and FE races this year.
The Spanish Grand Prix on May 9 meets Monaco FE, the Monaco GP meets the Marrakech FE on May 23 and the Azerbaijan GP meets Santiago on June 6.
Additionally, Santiago’s double-headed ball, which has continued travel restrictions due to the coronavirus, could make it difficult for Vandoorne and de Vries to get to the Canadian GP on June 13.
It goes without saying that the Hulkenberg deal means that it would be available to Mercedes at events where Vandoorne and de Vries are employed elsewhere.

Hülkenberg proved himself as a substitute player at Racing Point in 2020 when he replaced both Sergio Perez (at Silverstone) and Lance Stroll (at the Nürburgring) in the cockpit after coronavirus infections. He started two of these races and scored points on both occasions.
Between 2010 and 2020, the 33-year-old competed in 178 F1 races for Williams, Force India, Sauber, Renault and Racing Point, but never made it onto the podium.
In addition to Hülkenberg, long-time Mercedes test driver Esteban Gutierrez has also been given a new role after he was named as a brand and business ambassador.
In the future, he will work with team management, the commercial department and marketing to maintain business relationships in the Latin American market.
