Formula 1 | Stroll: ‘Surprisingly better’ pace than expected for Aston Martin F1

Stroll: A

Lance Stroll finished tenth in the French Grand Prix, scoring a point for the fourth time this season. The Aston Martin F1 driver progressed throughout the race and finally managed to reach the top 10 under the blazing sun of Le Castellet.

« I’m happy, especially after this race, it’s like spending 1h30 in an oven! » Stroll said. « Yeah, I think we had surprisingly better pace in the race than expected, we could stay close to the guys in front. I had a good start, I had a good start to the race. »

« I got off to a good start and overtook [Pierre] Gasly, then [Alex] Albon, and at turn 8 I was able to make a good exit from the corner after the incident between [Esteban] Ocon and [Yuki] Tsunoda, and it started my race well! »

« We were obviously slower than the Alpines, but I was faster than [Daniel] Ricciardo and without the virtual safety car at the end of the race, I think I could have won another position. »

The last lap saw Stroll and his team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, fight for the point of tenth place, but the Canadian assures that they did not cross any limit: « It was close but everything was under control! I had some difficulty with the tires and he had more pace than me on the hard tyres, so I was able to stay ahead. »

Sebastian Vettel, on the other hand, was disappointed to miss out on the top 10 and was unhappy with the pace of his AMR22: « It was a bit frustrating being stuck in traffic throughout the race, but it was a bit expected given where we were starting from. We understood the car a bit better, but we were missing performance. The next race will be on a different circuit, so we’ll see. »
