The Formula 1 season is over and it’s time to look back on the sparkling racing season. In this article, GPblog looks back on the year of Aston Martin, the seventh team in the constructors’ championship.
Aston Martin: 5.7
Racing Point changed its name to Aston Martin last year in hopes of reviving its history. However, that turned out to be more difficult than expected. With Sebastian Vettel replacing Sergio Perez, who moved to Red Bull Racing, the team was confident of having a great season, but it was hard work in the end.

While Stroll scored points for Aston Martin in the first two races in Bahrain and Italy, it took Vettel five races to deliver a good performance. The team then had to continue to compete with the mid-range drivers, but Aston Martin did not succeed either.
At the end of the season, Aston Martin was in no man’s land. While AlphaTauri finished sixth with Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda with 142 points, Aston Martin only managed 77 points. Williams, who was again one place behind Aston Martin, was no less than 54 points less than his competitor.

While Vettel seemed of great value to Aston Martin with all his experience, it was disappointing last season. The figures show that the differences to his teammate are not great. Looking at the qualifying duels, Vettel made a good impression.
Vettel: 6.0
The 34-year-old German moved to Ferrari last season and seemed to be helping Aston Martin with his four world championships. On the track, however, there was little noticeable of the great qualities of the driver this season. He did not get past twelfth place in the world championship.
Where Perez has managed to shake off Stroll in recent years, Vettel had a lot more trouble with the Canadian. With only nine points difference, Vettel could not convince. At the same time, Vettel stood out positively with his statements in Qatar and Saudi Arabia and showed his personality.
Walk: 5.8
After spending two seasons at Williams, Stroll moved to Racing Point in 2019. In his first two seasons he scored 21 and 75 points, respectively. Last season, Stroll did significantly less with 41 points difference from 2020, but that’s partly due to his car.
The Canadian was able to collect points several times this year and thus moved close to Vettel at the end of the year. Even so, he failed to pull Aston Martin to the top and produce surprises. This season he and Vettel get another chance to prove themselves.
