F1 Safety Car 2021 : Everything you need to know about the Mercedes and Aston Martin F1 Safety Car

Everything you need to know about the Mercedes and Aston Martin F1 Safety Car and its importance for a Grand Prix.

Safety car, also known as a pace car, is essentially used to limit the speed of the racing cars when the track is under caution. On a wet day, the main job of a safety car is to find out how slippery the surface is for an F1 car to drive on. And when they are to be put on the track.

Long-time safety car driver Bernd Maylander will drive both the Aston Martin and Mercedes safety cars. The Bahrain hero Alan van der Merwe from last season is also doing the same for Medical Cars.

How does the F1 Safety Car work?

If an incident leaves a lot of dirt or damaged cars on the track, the safety car can be used to slow down the drivers while the marshals clean it up. Behind the safety car, the drivers are not allowed to overtake each other and maintain a minimum delta speed. To compensate for the resulting cooling of the tires, drivers are often watched as they burn out and swerve.

After the track is clear, Race Control notifies all teams, which in turn inform the drivers via team radio. When the lights of the safety car go out and slide into the pit lane, the drivers reach racing speed. If the green lights go out on the next lap, the race will continue.

Which cars are used as F1 Safety and Medical Cars?

Aston Martin made its debut in Proof of Safety and Medical Cars. The Vantage Safety Car and the DBX Medical Car made their debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix at the opening of the season.

The green Vantage Safety Car is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that reaches a speed of 0 to 60 km / h in 3.5 seconds. The DBX Medical Car reaches the same distance in 4.5 seconds with a defibrillator, fire extinguishers and a burn kit to respond to medical emergencies.

Mercedes has been the official Safety Car since 1996 and this season has the AMG GT R Safety Car and the C 63 S Estate Medical Car, both in red.

The AMG GT R has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and reaches a speed of 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds. Like the DBX Medical Car, the C 63 S Estate is equipped with medical devices in accordance with FIA specifications.
