It’s almost always the drivers and the team principals that get the spotlight in this sport. Naturally, it’s uncommon for someone behind the scenes, no matter how instrumental or important they are, to get any sort of press. But Lawrence Stroll, he is of a different breed. But what exactly got him interested in Formula 1, anyway?

Stroll’s been a key figure in turning the fortunes of Racing Point (formerly Force India) around. The money that he has injected and the brand that he’s embossed on the team have made them a viable contender for future F1 glory. But as it turns out, Stroll has always been, as they say, a car nut!

While on F1’s Beyond the Grid podcast, Tom Clarkson quizzed him about his early venture into the sport as a representative of Tommy Hilfiger. Stroll then went on to explain his decision to venture into the sport.
“No, we weren’t involved in any other sports. I guess it was partially my passion for automotive which I always have since I’m a little kid. And I saw again as the right platform we were looking to expand our brand globally and no sport does it better than Formula 1. There’s no other sport you can promote your brand like that.” But what got him interested in F1?
“I guess like any little boy growing up. Its cars and girls. Picture of a car on the wall, picture of a girl on the wall!”

Formula 1 is all about the results. But getting there also needs an insane amount of investment and resources. Luckily, for the British team, billionaire Lawrence Stroll is just the man. Recently, the Canadian mogul injected a fresh load of money into the budding contenders.

According to the Telegraph, “Stroll lifted his stake in AML to 23.3% from 19.0% on Monday. Stroll’s investment vehicle – Yew Tree – led to a £30m investment in the shares. Other investors include Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund with 16.7% and Chinese car maker Geely with 7.6%.”
