Extension of the Aston Martin F1 deal in case of doubt "not really"

Sebastian Vettel says there is “not really” any doubt that he would extend his Aston Martin Formula 1 deal to 2022 amid his anticipation of the upcoming regulations.

Aston Martin put an end to proposals that four-time F1 world champion Vettel could leave the team by announcing last week that he had triggered an option to renew his contract for the next season.

Vettel will partner with Lance Stroll again next year after joining Aston Martin after leaving Ferrari for 2021.

Vettel said on the Thursday ahead of the Russian Grand Prix this weekend that the agreement on a new deal was “not really” in doubt and spoke of his eagerness for the new rules coming next season.

“I think in the end the excitement for next year, the new cars, the new regs and I think where the team is going, all looks very promising,” said Vettel.

“We won’t know until next year, but it’s great to be a part of it.”

Since joining Aston Martin, Vettel has secured a podium finish with second place in Azerbaijan and this season brought home the majority of the team’s points in the battle for fifth place in the constructors’ championship.

In 2022, the technical regulations will be revised to enable better wheel-to-wheel races and possibly shake up the competition order.

“A lot will change next year, I don’t think anyone will win,” said Vettel.

“But I find the challenge to work with the team, I think the spirit in the team is great, I like the guys.

“It’s been a great season, maybe not in terms of results, but in terms of work. Morale is high, so a lot of things that excite me.

“Of course there are some things over a period of years that are less enjoyable than being here and answering right now [press conference] Questions, but yes. “

Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll has outlined a four to five year plan to try and turn the roster into F1 title contenders.

Significant investments have been made in the team, including a plan to build a new factory and wind tunnel at Silverstone, with the groundbreaking ceremony recently taking place on the site.

“I think a horizon of four or five years is fair when you look back on other teams, how long it has taken other teams to climb to the top,” said Vettel.

“The team’s vision and commitment are impressive. And the commitment is very high. So it can be less, but you never know it could be longer.

“But I have a feeling that the direction of the team is very promising and I think it will happen. So time will tell.”
