When it comes to Formula 1, Netflix has given the series a massive boost with its increasingly popular “Drive to Survive” series, which first started in the preseason in 2019. The show has covered the last three seasons of Formula 1 including the Covid-19 impacting the 2020 season and introducing a whole new generation of fans to this incredible sport. This has been especially good for the growth of Formula 1 in the United States, and the audience numbers in the country are this season thanks to the epic real-life season and Drive to Survive.
This collaboration with Netflix will expand in just under a month, with the streaming giant working with Formula 1 and the Schumacher family to create an honest and truthful all-access documentary about the legendary Michael Schumacher. The documentary is currently slated for a release around the world on September 15, and from the recently released teaser trailer, it looks like it’s going to be incredibly enjoyable and emotional to watch. That’s all we know so far about the upcoming Netflix documentary, and a bit of background on Michael Schumacher for those who might be new to the sport.

Michael Schumacher has been the man with some of the biggest records in Formula 1 for many years. It has taken until now for Lewis Hamilton to overshadow the win and pole record and achieve 7 world championship titles. Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut with the Jordan Grand Prix Team in Spa in 1991 and qualified for this race in seventh place on the grid.

He then moved from the next race to Benetton and won two world titles with the team in 1994 and 1995, before moving to Ferrari in 1996. He made a comeback with Mercedes from 2010 to 2012, but unfortunately that only brought a podium in 2012 in Valencia. The car was never good enough to give Michael or his team-mate Nico Rosberg the chance to win and pole positions on a regular basis.
The Netflix movie
about diversity
Schumacher had a terrible skiing accident with severe head injuries in the winter of 2014 and has not been seen in public since then. This ensures that this documentary, supported by and with the involvement of his family, will be extremely special and emotional. The documentary documents Schumacher’s career from his beginnings in karting to his seventh world championship title in 2004 and contains interviews with his wife Corinna and his children. Daughter Gina and son Mick, who now drives in Formula 1 with Haas, will appear in the film, as will many of Michael’s rivals and colleagues from Formula 1.

The film will show many unseen footage from both his Formula 1 days and his private life, with the full support of the Schumacher family. Aston Martin F1 driver Sebastian Vettel, a lifelong fan and recently a close friend of Schumacher, will also be there, as will David Coulthard and his brother and fellow F1 driver Ralf Schumacher. Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm described the film as a “family gift to her beloved husband and father”.
An emotional adventure
about USA today
Schumacher has not been seen in public since 2013, shortly before the skiing accident in which he fought for his life in hospital and was still recovering from his injuries at home. The family understandably kept Schumacher’s condition private and out of the public eye, despite the efforts of some rather tasteless journalists trying to find out as much as possible about Michael’s condition. Fans all over the world are of course saddened by what happened to Schumacher in this accident and the release of this film will be emotional for everyone and the perfect tribute to one of the best drivers in Grand Prix racing.
The film should be released in September

The film about Schumacher’s life is slated for release on Netflix on September 15th, and Formula 1 fans around the world will no doubt be streaming service everywhere when this release comes. The success of “Drive to Survive” has shown that Formula 1 documentaries and films certainly have a very strong place, and “Drive to Survive” has been commissioned again for a fourth season, with the camera teams teams and drivers already through the Formula 1 paddock. Fans are now ready for one of the most emotional roller coasters in Formula 1 on the big and small screen.
