Aston Martin’s F1 team is considering a new paint job

Aston Martin's F1 team is considering a new paint job

Last season, a team called Racing Point drove a bright pink Formula 1 car with white accents. This year the team has renamed itself Aston Martin and repainted its challenger for 2020 in a beautiful dark green. It looks a lot better, but as an executive from team sponsor BWT emphasizes, it certainly doesn’t pop on television.

Aston Martin apparently shares his concerns. Team CEO Otmar Szafnauer may not be interested in going back to his sponsor’s signature pink hue, but he told The Race that the car needs to be on TV in a way that it doesn’t. While the dark shade of green may be spectacular in person, it looks frustratingly like the Mercedes black on television. Szafnauer is aware of this problem, so paint changes may be involved in the near future.

Szafnauer is particularly interested in how the dark green shade the team uses looks personally over the past few years. Stronger pink accents for sponsor BWT are also possible, but BWT is no longer the team’s title sponsor and must now give part of the branding on the cars to the new sponsor Cognizant.

However, the green is non-negotiable. The Aston Martin F1 team has decided that Aston Martins will be British Racing Green for branding purposes, so the modified car will continue to be a dark green hue in the future. With the team focused on Aston Martin’s classic look, even the dramatic lime green used in the company’s now-retired GT racing program is an unlikely solution. Szafnauer put it in a nutshell: “Ferrari is red, Aston Martin is green.”
