Aston Martin is considering changes to the paint scheme of its car for the 2022 Formula 1 season to save weight while improving aesthetics.
New technical regulations for the next year will increase the minimum weight of cars by 40 kilograms. The most recent increase to 792 kg was confirmed by the FIA last month.
Teams have been given a higher minimum weight to accommodate changes to the design of next year’s cars, including the introduction of 18-inch wheels.
Aston Martin CEO Otmar Szafnauer confirmed to RaceFans that they could adjust the color or leave more areas of their car unpainted to save weight.
“We are looking at all of this mainly because I think that in the next year a lot of cars will be heavier due to the regulations and because of the 18-inch tires,” he said.
“So we’re looking everywhere to save weight. And color is one of those areas where you can save if you do a good job and we are now looking into those areas too. “
The team, previously known as Racing Point, switched from a flashy pink livery to British racing green in the off-season. Szafnauer said they also hope to improve the appearance of their 2022 car, especially when it can be seen on screen.
“The ethos of color has to stay the same,” he said. “Aston Martin Lagonda, who helped us with the color, and their design team are now looking at what else we can do to maybe make it a little more distinctive on TV, but without ruining the ethos of color personally.
“When you look at the car in the sun, that’s wonderful, so we want to keep that, but on TV make sure the green comes across a little better. That can be done and that is what they are looking for. But not a big finish. “
